This week on the blog we chat with Tara Taylor of Taylored Beauty!
Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a proud islander, the mother of a lego obsessed 4 year old, and the proud wife of a sweet Englishman. I love 90s hip hop, Mexican food, and all things beauty related. I turn 40 in early 2018 - and I am ok with it (currently.)
What inspired you to become a make up artist?
I have always expressed my creativity through cosmetics. I am a plus size woman and make up is one size fits all. As a teenager, when my friends were shopping for trendy outfits - you could find me at Shoppers Beauty Counter studying the newest trends in makeup. I would buy magazines just to drool over the Maybelline ads! I view beauty in every face – all shapes, colours and textures. Eventually I got myself a job as a Cosmetologist and worked my butt off practicing makeovers on my clients. My encouraging friend Rebecca asked me to assist her on a large wedding a few years ago and my cheeks hurt from smiling for days after. It just felt natural to start booking my own weddings - and Taylored Beauty was born ☺
What is your favourite type of look to create?
I love a timeless natural look with most of the emphasis on flawless glowing skin, great eyebrows and beautiful lashes. I can also whip out a killer winged liner and statement lip when the need arises!
How long have you been doing bridal make up?
2018 will be my 3rd season, and am looking forward to my busiest one to date!
How long do you typically require for bridal make up?
I schedule an hour session for Bridal applications.
Do you offer a trial?
While not mandatory – I strongly encourage trials! They provide a chance for the Bride and Artist to get to know each other both personally and artistically. A preview session encourages bridal feedback and allows us to make any necessary changes to the application before the big day.
How large of a bridal party can you accommodate? Do you have a minimum?
I can accommodate a wedding party of 8 working alone, with a minimum of 4 applications. For larger parties, arrangements can be made to source a second artist for the day.
What is your favourite part of being a part of a couple's special day?
On the Wedding Day, I arrange to have the bride for one full hour in my chair, uninterrupted. The bride is encouraged to delegate duties during that hour to a trusted friend or family member. During our hour together, the Bride can enjoy being pampered, but also decompress. I love offering that escape. Having said that, nothing beats the big reveal – I get shivers every time I pass the mirror for their first glance!
Do you offer on-site services?
Yes! I am completely mobile, and I arrive equipped with full makeup kit, chair and professional lighting. Travelling across our beautiful Island is an added perk to this amazing job!
Do you do make up full time?
I am employed full time by Medavie Blue Cross, where I have spent the last 15 years working in Federal Health Claims Adjudication.
Taylored Beauty Makeup Artistry offers evening and weekend appointments.
What are your favourite brands to work with?
I love working with Estee Lauder, MAC cosmetics, Laura Mercier, Tarte, Make Up Forever and NYX to name a few. I am definitely not loyal to a particular brand. I have built my kit strictly from trial (and error!) product testing. The most important thing to me in a cosmetic is longevity on the skin.
